A Simple Guide for Your Clients on How to Maintain Painted and Veneered Furniture

You spend months planning an immaculate, luxury interior, and deliver it to perfection. You hand over the keys to your high-net-worth client or boutique hotel manager, confident in your success. However, once you leave the site, there rises a major problem… the daily maintenance.
Despite the best intentions, housekeeping staff or private clients often rely on aggressive multi-purpose sprays, wet cloths, or heavy-handed polishing. These everyday cleaning routines can slowly degrade the premium finishes you worked so hard to select, turning a beautiful installation into a maintenance headache.
The silent threat to your design reputation
When beautifully finished timber begins to cloud, peel, or crack under the assault of harsh supermarket detergents, the blame rarely lands on the cleaning products. Instead, the client looks at the furniture, and, ultimately, questions your design choices and material specifications.
A stunning project can rapidly look tired, chipping away at the hard-earned trust you have built. For boutique hoteliers, constant abrasive cleaning can quickly wear down surfaces, leaving expensive guest suites looking substandard.
Your reputation as a high-end designer is at the mercy of whoever holds the cleaning cloth.
A simple guide for your clients on how to maintain painted and veneered furniture
When considering how to care for painted and veneered furniture, the golden rule is to keep things simple and avoid harsh chemicals.
Standard supermarket polishes often contain silicones or wax. These build up over time, trapping dust and creating a cloudy, sticky film that ruins the original sheen of the piece.
Instead, follow these basic steps to maintain the high-end finish:
Use the right cloth: Daily dusting requires nothing more than a dry, clean microfibre cloth. For light grime, a slightly damp cloth is ideal. The trick is to wring the cloth out so it’s barely moist, wipe the surface, and follow up immediately with a soft, dry cloth to prevent watermarks.
Control the moisture: Managing humidity and liquids is critical for veneered pieces. Veneer is crafted by bonding a thin slice of real wood onto a stable, engineered substrate like premium MDF. Although this construction is highly stable, pooled liquids can still seep into the edges and cause wood fibres to expand. Spills must be blotted up immediately rather than wiped, which can push moisture into the joints.
Avoid direct heat and sunlight: Direct heat can cause finishes to crack or discolour. Always advise clients to use coasters, placemats, or hot pads, and avoid placing bespoke items directly next to radiators or in constant, direct sunlight. Also, pay particular attention to intense heating of rooms, as this can also cause furniture to warp.
Partnering with a technical ally for lasting quality
At Innovate Contract Furniture, we design and manufacture furniture to be stylish yet robust.
We craft our bespoke furniture in our Leeds-based workshop, ensuring every element matches your exact drawings and unique specifications.
For our painted surfaces, we traditionally apply a hard-wearing A/C (acid-catalyst) 10% lacquer finish, and we can also use custom stains to highlight the natural beauty of the wood. This commercial-grade finish provides a highly resilient barrier, protecting your design from daily wear and tear.
By prioritising high-end materials and partnering with a technical ally like us, you gain peace of mind. We manage the complex details of production so you can focus on the big creative picture.
Our collaborative approach ensures that your bespoke elements look just as exquisite years down the line as they do on handover day.
